Dubai, United Arab Emirates
At COP28 in Dubai on Wednesday, countries from around the world approved by consensus a decision calling for a “transition” away from fossil fuels, for the first time in the history of UN climate conferences.
As soon as the closing plenary session opened, delegates adopted the decision prepared by the United Arab Emirates, triggering a standing ovation and thunderous applause from delegates.
This is a “historic decision to accelerate climate action”, said Sultan Al Jaber, president of the UN conference and head of the Emirati oil company, Adnoc.
COP28 opened in Dubai on Thursday November 30 with calls from its organizers to stop sidestepping the fossil fuel debate.
“These next two weeks are not going to be easy”, warned COP28 President Sultan Al Jaber as he opened the 28th United Nations Climate Change Conference at a ceremony attended by delegates from nearly 200 countries.
It would seem fair to say that, after those difficult days, the result is in.
“We have wording on fossil fuels in the final agreement, for the first time,” he added, triggering fresh applause.
“We should be proud of this historic success, and the United Arab Emirates, my country, is proud of its role in achieving it,” he added. “We leave Dubai with our heads held high.”
