Together, the G7 countries account for 38% of the global economy and are responsible for 21% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to figures for 2021 from the Institute for Climate Analysis.
None of its member countries is on track to meet emissions reduction targets for 2030, which will be reduced by โat best only half of what is neededโ, according to a report by this institute.

G7 ministers meeting in Italy have said that efforts to raise funds to help the poorest countries tackle climate change should include all โcountries able to contributeโ. Under a 1992 UN climate convention, only a small handful of high-income countries had committed to funding the fight against global warming.

Coal is the most polluting fossil fuel, and environmental campaigners had urged the #G7 โ which includes Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK and the US โ to lead by example.
