More than 900 people are suspected of having contracted Ebola hemorrhagic fever in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) announced Sunday evening.
โAs surveillance efforts are stepped up in the fight against #Ebola in the #DRC, more than 900 suspected cases have been identified to date, including 101 confirmed cases,โ Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wrote on X, without mentioning the number of deaths.
In a latest update released on Saturday, the countryโs Ministry of Health reported that the outbreak had caused 204 deaths out of 867 suspected cases.
On May 15, the country declared an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment, and which has a case fatality rate of up to 50%. The WHO has issued an international health alert.
Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people in Africa over the past 50 years, with a fatality rate ranging from 25% to 90%, according to the WHO.
