World Bank approves $311 million in financing to expand grid-connected renewable energy capacity in West Africa
WASHINGTON, December 20, 2022 – The World Bank today approved $311 million in financing for the Regional Solar Emergency Response Project (RESPITE) to be deployed in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Chad and Togo.
This International Development Association (IDA)* funded project includes a $20 million grant to the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) to help it fulfil its regional mandate and facilitate future regional electricity trade.
The new project aims to increase grid-connected renewable energy capacity and strengthen regional integration in participating countries.
It will finance the installation and operation of approximately 106 megawatts of solar photovoltaic power with battery energy storage systems, the expansion of 41 megawatts of hydropower capacity, and the distribution and transmission of electricity in the four countries.
